Washing the Drapes
IMPORTANT: Before trying to wash your draperies, CHECK THE TAGS. A few draperies should ONLY BE CLEANED PROFESSIONALLY. NEVER wash them if:
They are not specifically labeled as washable (if they’re lined, be sure BOTH the drapery fabric and the lining are recorded as machine washable).
The fabric is damaged, frayed or faded (i.e. by sunlight)

Carefully remove the drapes from the rods (it is best to have someone help you with this as you will probably need a step stool or small ladder to reach the sticks ). NEVER pull or tug the draperies to receive down them as this might damage the walls, the sticks or the fabric.
In the event the draperies are hung with pins or hooks remove these and set them aside.
Hand wash a detergent such as Woolite and every panel in cool water. For drapes that are big, it may be easier to use the bathtub in place of the sink.
In the alternative, the drapes can be placed on the GENTLE cycle in your washer, using warm or cold water, as indicated on the tag. Opt for chilly if the label doesn’t indicate a temperature setting. Use a gentle detergent. Don’t overload your washer. In case your draperies are bulky or big, consider carrying them or doing the panels one at some time at which you can use oversize washers.
Put the curtains in a drier on the setting indicated on the label (probably low heat). If no dryer setting is signaled, put “no heat” (fluff) setting. Take care not to overload the dryer as well.
Look at carrying them to a laundromat with dryers or doing one panel at one time. The most common source of harm to draperies during the cleaning method is warmth; when in doubt (especially if having a commercial drier unfamiliar for you), use the”no heat” setting. Suggestion: If you’re lucky enough to have an old fashioned clothesline, instead of the dryer, hang your draperies outside to dry on the clothesline.
