Washing the Drapes
IMPORTANT: Before attempting to clean your draperies, CHECK THE TAGS. A few draperies should BE CLEANED PROFESSIONALLY. NEVER wash them if:
They are not specifically labeled as washable (when they are lined, make sure BOTH the drapery fabric and the liner are listed as machine washable).
The cloth is damaged, frayed or faded (i.e. by sunlight)
The draperies are pleated
Other vases or trim are not listed as color-fast
The draperies contain an indication for”dry clean only”
If your draperies are machine washable, take heed of this tag and follow these simple steps:
Carefully remove the curtains from the rods (it is ideal to have someone help you with this because you will probably require a step stool or small ladder to get to the rods). NEVER tug or pull the draperies to receive down them as this may damage the rods, the cloth or the walls.
The draperies are hung with pins or hooks if get rid of these and set them apart.
Hand wash every panel in cool water and a detergent such as Woolite. For drapes that are big, it may be easier to use the tub rather than the sink.
The drapes can be placed in your washer to the GENTLE cycle, as indicated on the label, using warm or cold water. If the label does not indicate a temperature setting, then opt for cold. Use a gentle detergent without bleach. If your draperies are big or bulky, consider carrying them into a laundromat or doing the panels at some time at which you are able to use washers.
Place the curtains in a dryer on the setting indicated on the tag (probably low heat). Take care to not overload the dryer as well.
Look at doing a single panel at a time or taking them into a laundromat with dryers that are oversized. The usual cause of damage to draperies during the cleaning process is heat; when in doubt (particularly if using a commercial drier not familiar to you), use the”no heat” setting. Suggestion: If you’re fortunate enough to possess an old clothesline, instead of the dryer, hang your draperies outside to dry on the clothesline. You won’t need to be concerned about overheating, and the drapes will have a natural fresh scent. To maintain fabric from fading, prevent hanging in direct sun.
Eliminate from your dryer if desired and press. Again, check your tag. Use a cool iron if no sign is provided. To prevent damage, utilize the iron on the REVERSE side of the draperies.
Replace the pins or hooks (if any) and re-hang the draperies on the sticks. It is best to do so with a different person.
