How to Wash Drapes

Drapery Cleaning in Palo Alto — Cleaning the draperies can extend their life and free your house of unwanted dust, dirt, pet hair and allergens.
Weekly Maintenance
Eliminate dust from your curtains with your vacuum. Most vacuums have. Set the brush attachment at the end of brush and then the hose in a up and down motion throughout the fabric. A vacuum also works well for this undertaking.
Washing the Drapes
IMPORTANT: Before attempting to wash your draperies, CHECK THE TAGS. Some draperies should BE CLEANED PROFESSIONALLY. NEVER wash them :
They aren’t specifically labeled as washable (if they are lined, be sure BOTH the drapery fabric and the liner are recorded as machine washable).
The cloth is damaged, frayed or disappeared (i.e. by sunlight)

The draperies are pleated

Trim or other vases are not listed as color-fast

If the draperies indicate”dry clean only,” you should take them into a dry cleaner that specializes in draperies and window treatments. Take a part of this label and follow these steps if your draperies are machine washable:
Carefully remove the drapes from the rods (it’s ideal to have someone assist you with this because you will most likely need a step stool or little ladder to reach the sticks ). NEVER tug or pull on the draperies to get down them since this might damage the cloth, the rods or the walls.
If the draperies are wrapped with pins or hooks remove and set them aside.
Hand wash a gentle detergent such as Woolite and every panel in water. For large drapes, it may be much easier to use the bathtub rather than the sink.
In the alternative, the curtains can be put on the GENTLE cycle in your washer, using cold or warm water, as indicated on the tag. Opt for cold if the tag does not indicate a temperature setting. Use a mild detergent without bleach. Don’t overload your washer. Consider taking them or doing the panels at a time at which you can use oversize washers In case your draperies are large or bulky.
Put the drapes in a dryer on the setting indicated on the tag (probably low heat). Take care to not overload the dryer as well.
Consider doing one panel at one time or carrying them to a laundromat with dryers that are oversized. The most common source of damage to draperies through the cleaning method is warmth; when in doubt (particularly if using a commercial dryer not familiar for you), use the”no heat” setting. TIP: If you are lucky enough to have an old fashioned clothesline, then rather than the dryer, hang your draperies outside to dry on the clothesline. You won’t have to be concerned about overheating, and the curtains will have a scent that is fresh that is natural. To keep fabric from fading, prevent hanging in sun.
Eliminate draperies from your dryer if needed and press gently. Again, assess for temperature settings in your tag. Use a cool iron if no indication is given. To prevent damage, utilize the iron just.
Replace the pins or hooks (if any) and then re-hang the draperies on the rods. It is ideal to do this with a different person.
