How to Wash Drapes

Washing the Drapes
IMPORTANT: Before trying to wash your draperies, CHECK THE TAGS. A few draperies should ONLY BE CLEANED PROFESSIONALLY. NEVER wash them if:
They aren’t specifically labeled as washable (if they are lined, be sure BOTH the drapery fabric and the liner are recorded as machine washable).
The fabric is damaged, frayed or faded (i.e. by sunlight)
The draperies are pleated
Trim or other embellishments Aren’t recorded as color-fast
If the draperies indicate”dry clean only,” you should take them into a dry cleaner that specializes in draperies and window treatments. Take a part of this tag and follow these steps if your draperies are machine washable:
Carefully remove the curtains from the rods (it’s best to have someone assist you with this because you will probably need a step stool or small ladder to get to the sticks ). NEVER tug or pull on the draperies to get them down since this may damage the cloth, the rods or the walls.
If the draperies are hung with pins or hooks remove and set them aside.
Hand wash a gentle detergent such as Woolite and each panel in cool water. For large drapes, it could be more easy to use the tub in place of the sink.
To the GENTLE cycle, the drapes can be placed in the alternative, with water, as indicated on the label. Elect for chilly, if the label doesn’t indicate a temperature setting. Use a mild detergent. In case your draperies are big or bulky, consider taking them or doing the panels one at a time where you can use oversized washers.
Put the drapes in a drier on the setting indicated on the tag (probably low heat). Take care to not overload the dryer.
Consider doing a single panel at a time or carrying them into a laundromat with dryers that are oversized. The usual cause of harm to draperies during the cleaning process is heat; if in doubt (especially if having a commercial dryer unfamiliar for you), use the”no heat” setting. Suggestion: If you are lucky enough to have an old clothesline, then rather than the dryer, hang your draperies outside to dry on the clothesline. You won’t have to be concerned about overheating, and the curtains are going to have fresh odor that is natural. To maintain fabric prevent hanging in sun.
Remove draperies out of your dryer and press gently if desired. Again, check your tag. Use a cool iron, if no indication is given. To prevent damage, utilize the iron just on the side of their draperies.
Replace the pins hooks (if any) and re-hang the draperies on the sticks. Again, it is best to do so with another person.
