How to Wash Drapes

Drapery Cleaning in Marina del Rey — Cleaning the draperies into your home can prolong their life and free your home of unwanted dust, dirt, pet hair and allergens.
Weekly Maintenance
Remove dust from your drapes with your vacuum. Most vacuums have a soft brush attachment which is perfect for the drapes. Simply set the brush attachment on the end of this accessory hose and sweep in a up and down movement across the cloth. A vacuum also works well for this particular undertaking.
Washing the Drapes
IMPORTANT: Before attempting to clean your draperies, CHECK THE TAGS. Some draperies should ONLY BE CLEANED PROFESSIONALLY. NEVER wash them if:
They aren’t specifically labeled as washable (if they are lined, be sure BOTH the drapery fabric and the lining are listed as machine washable).
The cloth is broken, frayed or disappeared (i.e. by sun )

Trim or other vases are not listed as color-fast

For one in your area, check your regional yellow pages. Take a part of this label and follow these steps In case your draperies are machine washable:
Carefully remove the drapes from the rods (it’s ideal to have someone assist you with this because you will most likely require a step stool or small ladder to get to the rods). NEVER tug or pull on the draperies to get them down since this may damage the rods, the cloth or the walls.
The draperies are wrapped with pins or hooks In the event remove and set them apart.
Hand wash each panel in cool water and a detergent such as Woolite. For large drapes, it could be much easier to use the bathtub rather than the sink.
On the GENTLE cycle, the drapes can be put in the alternative, using warm or cold water, as indicated on the label. If the tag doesn’t indicate a temperature setting, then elect for cold. Use a gentle detergent without bleach. DO NOT overload your washer. Consider carrying them to a laundromat or doing the panels at some time where you can use oversized washers In case your draperies are big or bulky.
Place the curtains in a dryer on the setting indicated on the label (probably low heat). If no drier setting is signaled, put “no heat” (fluff) setting. Take care not to overload the dryer.
Look at taking them to a laundromat with dryers that are oversize or doing a single panel at a time. The most common source of harm to draperies during the cleaning process is heat; when in doubt (especially if having a commercial drier unfamiliar for you), use the”no heat” setting. TIP: If you are lucky enough to have an old fashioned clothesline, rather than the dryer, hang your draperies out to dry on the clothesline. You won’t have to be concerned about overheating, and the curtains will have a natural scent. To keep fabric from fading, avoid hanging in sun.
Remove from your dryer if needed, and press lightly. Again, assess your tag. Use a cool iron, if no sign is given. To prevent damage, utilize the iron only.
Replace the pins or hooks (if any) and re-hang the draperies on the sticks. It is best to do this with a different individual.
