How to Wash Drapes

Drapery Cleaning in Downey — Cleaning the draperies can extend their life and free your house of unwanted dust, dirt, pet hair and other allergens.
Weekly Maintenance
Remove dust from your curtains with your vacuum. Most vacuums have a soft brush attachment which is fantastic for the drapes. Set the brush attachment at the end of this attachment hose and then brush in a up and down motion across the cloth. A handheld vacuum also works well for this particular task.
Washing the Drapes
IMPORTANT: CHECK THE TAGS Before trying to wash your draperies. A few draperies should ONLY BE CLEANED PROFESSIONALLY. NEVER wash them :
They are not specifically labeled as washable (when they’re lined, make sure BOTH the drapery fabric and the lining are recorded as machine washable).
The cloth is broken, frayed or disappeared (i.e. by sunlight)

The draperies are pleated

Trim or other vases Aren’t listed as color-fast

For one in your area, check your regional yellow pages. Take a part of the label and follow these steps, if your draperies are machine washable:
Carefully remove the drapes from the sticks (it is best to have someone assist you with this as you will probably need a step stool or small ladder to reach the sticks ). NEVER tug or pull on the draperies to receive them down as this might damage the rods the fabric or the walls.
If the draperies are wrapped with pins or hooks get rid of these and place them aside.
Hand wash each panel in water and a gentle detergent such as Woolite. For drapes that are big, it could be much easier to use the bathtub in place of the sink.
On the GENTLE cycle, the curtains can be placed Instead, as indicated on the label, using warm or cold water. If the label doesn’t indicate a temperature setting, then elect for cold. Use a gentle detergent. DO NOT overload your washer. In case your draperies are large or bulky, consider carrying them into a laundromat or doing the panels one at a time at which you are able to use washers.
Place the drapes in a dryer on the atmosphere indicated on the tag (probably low heat). Be careful to not overload the dryer also.
Look at taking them to a laundromat with dryers that are oversize or doing a single panel at one time. The most common cause of damage to draperies during the cleaning method is warmth; if in doubt (particularly if having a commercial dryer not familiar for you), use the”no heat” setting. TIP: If you’re lucky enough to possess an old clothesline, then instead of the dryer, hang your draperies outside to dry on the clothesline. You won’t have to be concerned about overheating, and the curtains will have a fresh odor that is natural. To maintain fabric from fading, avoid hanging in sun.
Eliminate draperies out of your dryer promptly and press gently if needed. Again, check for temperature settings in your tag. Use a cool iron, if no sign is provided. To avoid damage, use the iron on the REVERSE side of their draperies.
Replace the pins hooks (if any) and re-hang the draperies on the rods. Again, it is best to do this with another person.
