How to Wash Drapes

Drapery Cleaning in Bellflower — Cleaning the draperies can extend their life and free your house of unwanted dust, dirt, pet hair and other allergens.
Weekly Maintenance
Remove dust from your drapes with your vacuum. Most vacuums have a soft brush attachment that’s perfect for the drapes. Set the brush attachment at the end of the hose and sweep in a up and down movement throughout the cloth. A vacuum also works well for this particular task.
Washing the Drapes
IMPORTANT: Before trying to wash your draperies, CHECK THE TAGS. Some draperies should BE CLEANED PROFESSIONALLY. NEVER wash them if:
They aren’t specifically labeled as washable (when they’re lined, be sure BOTH the drapery fabric and the liner are listed as machine washable).
The fabric is broken, frayed or disappeared (i.e. by sun )

The draperies are pleated

Trim or other vases Aren’t recorded as color-fast

For anyone in your area, check your local yellow pages. Take a part of the label and follow these simple steps, if your draperies are machine washable:
Carefully remove the drapes from the sticks (it’s ideal to have someone assist you with this as you will most likely need a step stool or small ladder to get to the rods). NEVER tug or pull the draperies to get them down since this may harm the walls, the rods or the fabric.
The draperies are hung with pins or hooks if , carefully get rid of and place them aside.
Hand wash a detergent such as Woolite and each panel in cool water. For large drapes, it could be easier to use the tub in place of the sink.
In the alternative, the curtains can be put on the GENTLE cycle in your washer, as indicated on the tag using warm or cold water. Elect for cold if the label does not indicate a temperature setting. Use a mild detergent. In case your draperies are large or bulky, look at taking them or doing the panels one at some time at which you are able to use washers.
Put the curtains in a dryer on the setting indicated on the tag (most likely low heat). Take care to not overload the dryer also.
Look at taking them into a laundromat with oversize dryers or doing a single panel at a time. The most common cause of damage to draperies through the cleaning method is warmth; when in doubt (particularly if using a commercial dryer unfamiliar to you), use the”no heat” setting. Suggestion: If you’re fortunate enough to have an old fashioned clothesline, then rather than the dryer, hang your draperies outside to dry on the clothesline. You won’t have to worry about overheating, and the curtains are going to have fresh odor that is natural. To maintain fabric prevent hanging in direct sun.
Eliminate draperies from your dryer promptly if needed and press lightly. Again, assess for temperature settings in your tag. Use a cool iron if no indication is given. To avoid damage, utilize the iron on the side of the draperies.
Replace the pins or hooks (if any) and re-hang that the draperies on the rods. It is ideal to do this with a different person.
