1.

Bucket
Soft-bristle brush or sponge
Water
Optional:
Rubber gloves
Garden hose
Wet-dry vacuum

2. Remove Dirt and Debris
Gently vacuum about the rug on both sides. You should make sure every last piece of debris is gone. For those who have pets, use the brush attachment to get any lingering stray hairs.

3. Mix Your Cleaner
When it comes to the actual cleaning solution, you may use a rug shampoo. Whatever shampoo you choose, follow its precise instructions (found on the bottle) for blending.

As an alternative, you may even use mild dish soap mixed in a bucket with warm water. Do not use hot water since it could shrink the rug or cause fading.

4. Do a Color Test
Before you begin scrubbing, make sure the cleaner does not cause the colors to run. Test the solution to the corner of the rug to make sure it is colorfast. If the color does not bleed, it’s safe to move on to another step.

5. Wash the Rug
Let the cleaner sit on the rug for a couple of minutes before you start rinsing. Anything less than this and you’re going to shortchange the cleaning process. Give it those five minutes to set in and start lifting dirt away.

6. Rinse the Rug
Rinse the soap from this rug using a garden hose or buckets of clean water. Be sure all the cleaning solution is completely removed from the area rug along with the runoff water is crystal clear.

7. Remove Excess Water
Now, you’ll want to do away with as much surplus water from the rug as possible so it’ll dry quicker. You can use a wet-dry vacuum should you have one, or use a squeegee in the direction of the rest.

8. Permit the Rug Dry
The next-to-last step to clean an area rug is just letting it dry. Lay the rug level and permit the cover of the rug to dry completely. After that, flip it over to allow the base side dry. Fans may help speed up the procedure. Make sure the rug is totally dry before you return it to the area.

9.
During the cleaning process, fibers and threads may get compacted and squished. Revive them by running a vacuum within the now-dry rug, or brush with a soft-bristled brush. Now you are finished, and can enjoy your freshly cleaned carpet. You know how to clean an area rug yourself, and you’re able to complete the job when you prefer.
