1.

Rug shampoo (or mild dish soap)

Bucket
Soft-bristle brush or sponge
Water
Optional:
Rubber gloves
Garden hose
Wet-dry vacuum

2. Eliminate Dirt and Debris
Gently vacuum about the rug on either side. You should be certain every last bit of debris has been gone. If you have pets, use the brush attachment to get any lingering stray hairs.

3. Mix Your Cleaner
When it comes to the real cleaning solution, you can use a rug shampoo. Whatever shampoo you choose, follow its specific directions (located on the jar ) for mixing.

As an alternative, you may also use mild dish soap mixed in a bucket with warm water. Don’t use hot water as it could shrink the rug or cause fading.

4. Do a Colour Test
Before you start scrubbing, make sure the cleaner doesn’t cause the colors to run. Test the solution to the corner of the rug to be certain it’s colorfast. If the color doesn’t bleed, it is safe to move on to the next step.

5. Wash the Rug
Let the cleaner sit on the rug to get a five minutes before you begin rinsing. Anything less than that and you’ll shortchange the cleaning procedure. Give it those five minutes to install and get started lifting dirt away.

6. Rinse the Rug
Scrub the soap out of this rug using a garden hose or buckets of clean water. Be certain all of the cleaning solution is completely removed from the area rug along with the runoff water is crystal clear.

7. Remove Extra Water
Now, you’ll want to get rid of as much excess water from the rug as possible so it will dry quicker.

8. Let the Rug Dry
Lay the rug flat and permit the cover of the rug to dry completely. After that, turn it over to let the bottom side dry. Fans may help speed up the process. Make sure the rug is totally dry before you return into the room.

9. Vacuum or Brush Out the Rug
During the cleaning process, fibers and threads can get compacted and squished. Revive them by running a vacuum over the now-dry rug, or brush them with a soft-bristled brush. Now you’re finished, and may enjoy your freshly cleaned carpet. You know how to clean an area rug yourself, and you can complete the job when you like.
