Hiding Stains

Let’s pretend for a second that your carpet is looking a little worse for wear and you’ve decided to hire a professional cleaning service. They are in high demand, though, so you’ll have to wait until next week for their arrival. Meanwhile, you’re preparing a family reunion in honor of your silver wedding anniversary. Before you can afford to have your carpet professionally cleaned, you should do some “first aid” to it in the meantime to keep from looking like a fool. Until you can get a professional to help, what are some good strategies for concealing the carpet stains that have already been made?

Warm soapy water applied topically is a common treatment.
If you notice that certain areas of your carpet are noticeably darker than the rest due to dirt accumulation and subsequent surface stains, you may want to give warm soapy water a try. But keep in mind that you have to exercise a lot of caution. It’s important to only use enough water to dampen a cloth and to blot the stain rather than rub it in, as doing the latter can cause the stain to spread and ruin the carpet. Any splotches of dirt that have darkened the surface could be temporarily relocated if this is done. Because it is not likely to be effective enough to remove a stain that has penetrated deeper into the material.

Combine baking soda and vinegar to make a solution.
Baking soda and vinegar have been used for decades as a tried-and-true method for cleaning carpets stained by various substances. While this won’t completely shock you, it is a neat trick that you may not be aware of. You should start by spraying the old stain with a mixture of white vinegar and baking powder. After that, cover it with a damp, lint-free cloth. Then, using the steam setting on a regular iron, iron over the towel while using very light pressure. Lifting the towel should reveal that the majority of the stain has been absorbed into the towel’s underside, rather than remaining on the carpet. A piece of advice I can give you if you do decide to do it is to use a carpet that is not a pricey Persian rug but rather one that is quite hardy. Maybe you’re making things worse instead of better.

Ignorance of the truth that surrounds it

If neither of the previous two methods works, and you’re left wondering how to cover up the carpet stain until the professional carpet cleaner can get there, a cover-up is always an option. It’s not surprising that many stains cluster around the seating arrangements and coffee tables. Turning the couch or coffee table could help hide the stain, and this might not be such a bad idea after all. Just tell your guests that you’ve decided to change things up and have a change around, and no one will be the wiser.

But what do you do if the carpet stain is smack in the middle of the room, where all eyes can see it? In reply, I would say… Take a look at a scatter rug. Again, people might compliment your sense of style, and nobody would ever notice the stain.

If you’re out of other options and your carpet is light in color, you could try using talcum powder to cover the stain. Even though this is only a stopgap, it may be enough to get you through the party without feeling too bad about yourself.
