Can you disinfect your mattress?
Mattress Cleaning in Antioch — But if you were to think about all of the germs, bacteria and even creatures (yuck!) Which make themselves at home in your mattress, chances are you would not get much sleep. We wash our sheets faithfully every week (mom would be so pleased ), and we all know that we should turn and our mattresses every few months to make them last longer (“if” is the operative word ), but can it be feasible to disinfect your mattress?
The answer: Kind of. The longer version: With just a little effort, you can disinfect the surface of your mattress. The interiors are a different story, unless you just happen to have access to a steam cleaner and a containment unit. But we have all survived sleeping them on this long, right?
If possible, clean your mattress outside on a sunny, not-too-humid day. (There’s a reason we’ve spring cleaning and autumn cleaning instead of winter cleaning and summer cleaning!) The sun will help your mattress dry since you clean it; better yet, it functions as a natural diuretic, helping you kill bacteria that have a dose of UV rays. Lean your mattress against the wall in the front of a window and the next best option is to clear some space in your area, if you can not get outside.
Begin by removing as much dust as you can (and perhaps a couple of dust mites, even if you are lucky) by going through the entire surface of the mattress with your vacuum cleaner’s upholstery attachment and crevice tool. In case your mattress-cleaning spree was inspired by a spill, pet accident or occasion, use clean towels to soak up as much liquid vacuum.
There are a few unique techniques you can use to disinfect your mattress, As soon as you’ve eliminated the dust. Running a garment steamer or alternative handheld steam cleaner round the surface helps to kill germs and dust mites, along with a sprinkling of baking soda helps freshen the upholstery and also eliminate mild odors (let it sit a few minutes, then vacuum). However, to kill germs, you’ll need to use a solution of some kind.
Choose solution or an antibacterial spray with a scent you like, and avoid using bleach — it’s too harsh for the fabric covering on mattresses, although it’s great at killing germs. If you use a liquid cleaner, dilute it with warm water according to the instructions on the tag, then dip a clean rag to the solution, and then — this part is key — wring the rag out thoroughly so that it’s just barely damp. The target is to clean the surface of the mattress without letting it get soaked with moisture, which can lead to mould or mildew. For disinfectant sprays, spritz lightly across the surface of the mattress, then wipe with a clean rag that’s been dipped in warm water and completely wrung out. Be sure to give your mattress lots of time to dry — a couple of hours on each aspect is best. Then cover it with a freshly cleaned mattress pad, bedding and sheets and revel in a good night’s sleep!
